Well after many discussions and rumors more details are starting to circulate about the new version of the PSP that’s supposed to debut at the electronic gaming expo in June. Idea’s like touch screen, hidden keys, and dual analog sticks are things that are being thrown around but the only thing that’s known is that it’s going to be UMD free. This move is a huge step toward Playstation Networks download service.
Hardware wise, the PSP has been very competitive with sales but with the latest release of the of the Nintendo DS, the DSi, and Apple’s latest commitment to the gaming realm Sony is looking for ways to make the PSP more attractive. Sony has leaked that it is going to take many idea’s for the new PSP from their somewhat successful Wi-Fi gadget the Mylo 2. This device wasn’t very successful in the US but had impressive sales in Japan, similar to the way the Minidisk devices sold several years ago.
Two versions of the new PSP are said to be released. An 8GB version and a 16GB version. You know as well as I do that the 16GB version will have something else on it or in it that will make it a more attractive purchase other than just additional space.
My question to you is the lack of physical media a smart move for Sony at this juncture. Is society in a place to be able to DL all or any of their games? And what about the people who already own a PSP and want to upgrade to the newest version? What happens to their old games? Do you have to use your old PSP to play them or will there be a way to add them to your PSN account so you can download them onto your new PSP. I guess these will be the questions that Sony will have to answer at E3 this summer.
